Vanderbilt University is a private research university in Nashville, Tennessee. Founded in 1873, the university is named for shipping and rail magnate "Commodore" Cornelius Vanderbilt, who provided Vanderbilt its initial $1 million endowment despite having never been to the South. The Commodore hoped that his gift and the greater work of the university would help to heal the sectional wounds inflicted by the Civil War.
Vandy is a charter member of the Souutheastern Conference, and is the only private school in the SEC. With 6,600 students, it is also the smallest SEC school.
Vanderbilt's intercollegiate athletics teams are nicknamed the Commodores, in honor of the nickname given to Cornelius Vanderbilt. Students and alumni refer to Vanderbilt athletic teams as the "Dores" and use the cheer "Go Dores!"
