The University of Missouri (also known as the University of Missouri–Columbia, Mizzou, or MU) is a public land-grant and research university in Columbia, Missouri. Founded in 1839, it was the first public university west of the Mississippi River and is the flagship of the University of Missouri System. MU is Missouri's largest university with a current enrollment of over 30,000 students who come from every county in Missouri, every state in the nation, and more than 100 foreign countries.
The Missouri Tigers are members of the Big 12 Conference. Mizzou is the only school in the state with all of its sports in the NCAA Division I, the nation's highest level of college sports. Their colors are black and gold.
The official mascot for Missouri Tigers athletics is Truman the Tiger, who was created on September 16, 1986. Truman was named following a campus-wide naming contest in honor of Harry S. Truman, the only U.S. president from Missouri.
