Mississippi State University

Mississippi State University was created by the Mississippi Legislature in 1878 to fulfill the mission of offering training in "agriculture, horticulture and the mechanical arts . . . without excluding other scientific and classical studies, including military tactics." The university received its first students in the fall of 1880. In July 1965, the university enrolled its first African-American student. Today enrollment exceeds 17,000 students, and degrees are offered at all levels including doctoral. The main campus is located in Starkville, Mississippi.
